The Community leaders of Egbelu Obibiezena in Owerri have cried out to the federal government over lack of electricity in their community. The  community has been crying out loud over the issue for some years and nothing has been done to rescue them from darkness.

The community chairman told the news media that efforts were being made seven years ago to give them electricity but unfortunately the efforts was cut short due to poor cooperation between the community chairman back then and the federal government. He further said that he has tried his best to get the attention of the government over the issue but there hasn’t been any response yet.

A youth in the community, Mr. Daniel said that lack of electricity in their community has been a big challenge over the years and has caused high security issues because without street lights in the community the security personnel won’t be functional very well as it should be.

Another youth who is also a security personnel in the community also said that electricity is very important every community because it helps make life easy for everyone. He explained that lack of electricity in the community makes it difficult for him and his security team to do their job at night hour. He further said that the security operative in the community has reached out to the state government several times to intervene on the electricity issue but all efforts failed and left them frustrated with doing their job at night.

A teacher in the community complained that learning is so difficult in their community school because they don’t have electricity to power some appliances such as the fans, lab instruments and other appliances that make learning more easier and conducive. She said that during the hot weather, they need fans or air conditioner to keep the classrooms cool but instead there is no electricity to power these appliances and it makes the classrooms hot and uncomfortable for learning. She pleaded for the government to help them and give them steady electricity to make learning comfortable for the students.

An elder in the community, Mr Benjamin said that the community has been suffering from lack of electricity for over seven years and the elders council of the community has tried reaching out to the state government several times for help but nothing was done. He further said that the chairman of the community seven years ago failed them when he had the chance to help the community get steady electricity and since then it has been difficult to get such luck again. He also said that the current chairman of the community has been doing his best to make sure they have steady electricity but his efforts to reach the government has been difficult and that’s why they are crying out to the federal government to come and rescue them from this total darkness.

Another elder in the community also said that the state government once showed concern some years ago to help them but after making promises of helping them they did not fulfil their promises. He said that the community chiefs went to the government house to complain bitterly how lack of electricity has caused more harm than good in their community and the government officials promised them again that they will do something about it but till today nothing has been done about it.

An elderly woman in the community said that the electricity issue has been a very frustrating situation for the community, lamenting that at night hours it is difficult for anyone to walk or go anywhere because it is too dark and scary. She said that if there was electricity in the community, people will walk around or go anywhere without fear. She also complained about all efforts made by the chairman of the council to bring steady electricity into the community but all efforts failed.

Students in the community also complained bitterly how the electricity issue has affected them so badly in the community. They were all saying that learning in classrooms is so frustrating because during the hot season they are always sweating in class and this makes them not to focus in class as they are all fanning themselves and uncomfortable. They also said that if there was good electricity in the community, waking up in the morning and preparing for school would be so much better because they would have electricity to iron their clothes and heat up their water for bathing in the morning. The students also cried out to the federal government to do something about the lack of electricity in their community because it will make their life and learning easy in the community.

The state government has promised the community that steady electricity will be restored to the community after hearing all the complaints from the people. The king of the community also told his people to be patient with the government as they are also making efforts to rescue them from the darkness.
